The room was bright, too bright. Everything was white and smelled of chemicals, yuck! I slowly sat up, bringing my hand to my throbbing head, the dull constant pounding making me sick. I struggled to stand due to my terribly stiff back. I glanced around me and noticed many other ten year old children like me, one of them being my best friend, and they were all in giant glass boxes, like me.
"James!" I screamed, hoping he could hear me through the glass. He didn't respond he just kept sitting in the corner of his confines, his arms wrapped tightly around his knees. I noticed that something was off about him, I didn't know exactly what it was until I took a closer look at his back. My eyes widened and I took a horrified few steps back from the flawless glass as two small black wings about three feet in length came into focus in my eyes, they were attached to James's shoulder blades. I cried out as I flattened myself against the far wall of my cadge, feeling two feathered wings fold tighter against my back. I scrambled to the middle of my box and told my brain to let my... wings shoot out from my back, they did, reaching maybe five feet out. They were a deep carmel brown with small white dots scattered over the tips. I screamed and fell backwards, taking a closer look at where exactly I was. The room itself was completely white, looking much like an evil scientist's laboratory, it contained maybe four or five identical boxes, each keeping another child in it's glass prision. I looked over at James again and saw he was looking at me, worry in his eyes. James crawled towards the glass wall closest to mine, his russet skin and black hair contrasting sharply with the white of his enclosure as he pressed one hand to the glass. I crawled toward him, copying his movements as I "met" him at the glass.
"I'm so sorry Allie." He mouthed, a single tear escaping his eye.
"Why?" I mouthed back, confused and feeling very much alone even though James was right there, only inches from me.
"Because I'm not in there to comfort you." He replied, shivering as he looked away from me, not meeting my gaze. I knocked on the glass to get his attention before mouthing a "It's alright, your close enough." causing him to smile slightly, which earned a smile from me in return. A lock of my blonde hair fell into my eyes and I reached up and tucked it behind my ear before the door at one corner of the lab slid open and a black haired man stepped into the room. He padded silently over to the front of my glass room and smiled before mouthing six words that made my heart soar, no pun intended.
"I'm gonna get you outta here." I sent a horrified glance at James, thinking that he only men't me, why only me? The man was suddenly in James's box ushering him out and over to me. The man entered a code into a keypad and the front piece of glass slid into a small slit in the floor, enabling me to get to James. I flung my self into my best friend's arms, the tears flowing down my face.
"Who are you?" I heard James ask quietly as he stroked my hair soothingly. The man chuckled and shook his head.
"I'm Chris Dawson and I'm here to help you, to get you out of here. I used to work here but after I found out what they were doing here I vowed to get every child that they have mutated to have wings, out." Chris whispered, a sad smile on his face as he looked at James.
"What about the others?" I said, turning to face the man that was so brave to help us. Chris got a real sad look on his face as he sighed.
"They won't make it, they aren't like you and James, they have been mutated differently, they'll die soon. Giving children wings is the only mutation they have mastered." Chris explained as I broke down again, clutching James as the reality of the situation sunk in, this wasn't some horrible dream that I could wake up from, this was real.
"Oh my God." James hissed as he held me close as I cried for all the children in this room that would die in the near future.
"Lets get you two out of here before the Motherboard realizes what the hell is going on." Chris whispered, herding James, who was carrying me as if I weighed nothing, out of a small secret door in the side of my box. "Be very quiet, this place is heavily guarded by monsters that have emaculate hearing."

We slunk silently through the winding halls, James having to sometimes glide us over deep ravines that were designed to capture flightless mutants that tried to escape, not like any ever did without help, thank heavens we had Chris.
"What kind of monsters?" I squeaked, shaking in James's arms. James held me tighter and tried to squeeze through a small gap that Chris had just gone through. After we were right behind him again I heard Chris take in a small breath before he answered me.
"Monsters that I don't want nor can describe, all I can tell you is that if you ever run into one of them it'll be your last few minutes alive." James gasped quietly and shifted closer to the wall as I felt tears slip down my face. James noticed and kissed my forehead softly.
"Shh, Allie shh, I won't let anything happen to you, neither of us will." He whispered as he glanced up a Chris. Chris nodded and and motioned for us to stay very quiet.
"We're almost out, but we're coming to a crossroad so we have to be careful. As soon as we're across the lane we're home free." Chris tossed a smile at us and stepped out into the crossroad. When he was safely across he motioned for us to follow. James bolted across in seconds, staying in the darkness. Chris shoved on the back wall and to my amazement it gave way to a door which flooded the small space with sunlight, we were outside.
"Welcome to the world kids." Chris laughed as he quickly shut the door. "Now run to the black van over there and get in as quickly as you can, I'll be right there." James nodded and set me down, grasping my hand seconds later.
"Ready to run Allie?" James whispered to me. But instead of answering him I just ran as fast as I could to the van, it's side door opening as soon as I approached it. James was at my side moments later, helping me into the van before climbing in himself. Another dark haired man sat in the driver's seat, watching Chris as he sealed the door shut with a code of some sort. James hissed, putting me behind him, letting his wings fold back over my body.
"Relax youngin' I ain't gonna hurt ya'" The man said with a smile, his Scottish accent making him sound funny. "I'm Roger, I work with Chris ole boy o'er dere, bustin' 'is ass." James relaxed as Chris climbed into the passengers seat.
"Roger, how many times have I told you not to swear in front of the kids?" Chris scolded teasingly.
"Oh ha ha ha, shut it ya' moron." Roger said sarcastically as he started the car.

About a half hour later both James and I were fast asleep.

Chris's Point of View

I looked back at James and Allie and saw that they were both fast asleep so I took the chance to study both of them. James was a handsome young man, with russet skin and spiky black hair. He had muscles on his arms that a eleven year old boy could only have if he had been mutated... he had been. I wouldn't want to piss him off. He was holding the sleeping young Allie with tender love, love that ran deeper than friendship or like a brother, I could tell that he would be with her one day. Allie... she was an adorable ten year old sweetheart, cutest little thing that you'll ever see. She had short blonde hair and blue eyes with a perfect little body. She slept soundly curled up next to James, her breathing even.
  "We're fifteen
um..... almost done......
